"Cheeky Birdy" in Pastel Pencils

“I usually paint with oil, but I recently discovered a love of pastel. This was my first painting after dusting off my pastel pencils that have been sitting in my studio for ages.”

"Cicada"

I’ve spent the past decade working in conservation all over New Zealand, meeting many of our wonderful native species along the way. I work primarily in colour pencil, from images I’ve taken of flora and fauna while scrambling around remote alpine valleys, hunting pests. I particularly enjoy drawing our more colourful species, playing with highlights, and illustrating the colour that can be found in the seemingly mundane ones too.

My adventures and artwork can be found on Instagram at #briar_draws_nature.

My art journey began with adult colouring books and pencil.  However I soon became bored and decided to try painting.  Not as easy as it looked, so went to art classes at Impressions.  That was over seven years ago.  I like to try different subjects but have still not decided what I like to paint the most. After the death of my Husband, six years ago, I created my own studio, which has given me the freedom to paint whenever I feel like it."

A huge thank you to The Menz Shed for building us new stands for our art exhibits and a storage unit for them as well! We are so grateful.

Jeff & Colin on prototype, Richard on frame fabrication, Peter on painting, Tom on brackets, and Treasurer Grant as support and storage fit out.

Also massive thanks to Gilly, who has spearheaded this effort.

The Art Group Nelson has been a great inspiration for me and my own artistic development. I especially enjoy the monthly meetings with different guest speakers. Every guest speaker has something special to offer and I learn new things every time. Also, the encouragement we get from show & tell, where the members share their work is incredibly valuable. Thank you to the Art Group for being such a welcoming and lovely group

Being a member of the Art Group Nelson, has been a great learning time for me, with very affordable art courses offered and helpful advice. Also the opportunities I've had to take part in exhibitions, and meet other artists too.

I am thrilled to be a part of the art group community.
Art Group Nelson is a great link which connects the community through art, providing workshops, tutorials and exhibitions.
Great work, thank you.

I am part of the new comers to Art Group Nelson from about 1 year and just want to say that my feeling is that I have been here for a quite long time. Wonderful people, wonderful way to share experience. I love to use encaustic but I used other painting mediums as well and being part of AGN open new visions for my life, to be creative like other members , to hope for better and to share my experience. This is the most exciting " not visible" part of the art and artist life.
