What really happens at an Art Group Nelson meeting?

Stepping into an art group for the first time can feel a bit daunting, right? You might wonder if it’s all serious critiques, if everyone's an expert, or if you’ll feel out of place not knowing anyone. At Art Group Nelson, we get it, and we're here to tell you our meetings are far more relaxed, welcoming, and inspiring than you might imagine.

Whether you're new to art, new to Nelson, or simply curious about joining a creative community, here's an insider's look at what goes on.

A warm welcome

Every AGN meeting kicks off with a genuine welcome. We pride ourselves on being a friendly, inclusive bunch where no one's left standing alone.

Our monthly gatherings at Pūtangitangi Greenmeadows Community Centre in Stoke are buzzing from the moment you arrive. You’ll be greeted by members chatting, the committee organizing the evening's speaker, and artists setting up their latest works for our "Show and Tell" segment.

We introduce new members and make sure everyone feels right at home – after all, we've all been the new person before!

Staying connected

As an AGN member, you'll stay connected to the wider art world. Our meetings are where we share all the good stuff, including:

  • Upcoming local exhibitions

  • Opportunities to exhibit with the group

  • Calls for art from galleries and festivals

  • Community art projects

  • Group workshops

  • Open studio events

This part of the meeting is perfect for growing your presence as an artist, getting more involved in the Nelson arts scene, or finding your next creative adventure.

Inspiration and learning

Guest speakers & artist demonstrations

Each meeting typically features either a guest speaker or a live demonstration, often led by a local artist or one of our talented members. These sessions cover a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Encaustic painting techniques

  • How to photograph your art for exhibitions

  • The business side of being a working artist

  • Introductions to ceramics or lino printing

  • Art history talks with a local twist

  • Live painting or sketching demos

These presentations are always informative and interactive, offering plenty of chances to ask questions or even try something new yourself. They're a brilliant way to pick up new skills and stay inspired.

Casual conversations & creative connections

Some of the best moments happen informally over a cup of tea and a good chat. This is where genuine connections form, whether you're swapping tips about framing, asking for advice on a technique, or simply bonding over a shared love of colour and composition. Many of our members form lasting friendships and collaborations; it's not uncommon to hear someone say, "I just came along to see what it was like — and I never left."

Celebrating our art

A showcase of member artworks

One of the highlights of every meeting is our “show and share” segment. This is a chance for members to display recent work and talk briefly about their creative process. It’s not a critique session; it’s a celebration! Members might discuss what inspired a piece, how they tackled a particular technique, or any challenges they're working through. Some artists simply show their work and explain their process, while others might ask for direct advice from the audience on elements like composition, colour, contrast or value.

You'll see a diverse range of styles and media, from oil paintings to acrylics, watercolours, mixed media, pottery, wooden objects, and even photography. This diversity makes each meeting so rich and inspiring. New members are encouraged to bring something if they like, but there's never any pressure – you're welcome to just observe and absorb.

No pressure, just passion

Worried you don’t have a fine arts degree? Haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years? Not sure what your artistic voice is yet? Don't sweat it. Art Group Nelson meetings are for everyone. There’s no judgment or gate keeping, just a shared love of art and creativity. Some members join to reignite a creative flame after retirement, while others are students or working artists seeking community. What unites us is our passion for making, sharing and celebrating art in all its forms.

What you'll gain

After your first meeting, you’ll likely leave with some notes containing arty ideas, you might jot down a few new names of artists you want to learn more about, you may sense a burst of your own creative energy -- plus you have that comforting feeling that you've found your people.

Plus, you’ll unlock a growing number of member perks, including exhibition opportunities, skill-building events, collaborative projects, and a platform to share your work with the wider community.

Ready to see for yourself?

Curious? Excited? Maybe a little nervous (in a good way)? We'd love to meet you! Our next meeting is just around the corner – the first Wednesday of the month – and you’re warmly invited to attend. Whether you want to dip a toe in or dive headfirst into Nelson's creative community, Art Group Nelson is the perfect place to start. Feel free to pop in for a meeting to see what we're all about.
